|Source data and documentation are available from the National Science Foundation, National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics.|
|Data are available for FY 1971-2014.|
|FY 2014 is defined as the Federal government's fiscal year,
October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014.|
|Current As Of|
|Data are current as of June 2016.|
|Population Size and Structure|
|The survey population includes all academic institutions
that receive funding from any of the surveyed Federal
agencies; these agencies are believed by NSF to account for
virtually all Federal research and development (R&D)
obligations to the academic sector.|
|The Federal Agency category values do not retain the historical organization of the agencies. Instead, each agency is grouped with the department with which it has been most recently associated, and data for all years are reported to reflect the current organization of the agency in order to provide consistent trend data. The survey-specific Federal Support Survey Agency category values provide data at the agency level by which the data were collected and retain the historical organization of the agencies. Please note that NSF publications report agency data to reflect the historic organization of agencies rather
than the current organization of agencies. The following are agency organizational changes:
1) The Office of Education and National Institute of Education were part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare before it was split into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services in FY 1980. In the Federal Agency category, data for these two agencies are included with the Department of Education for all years.
2) Due to reorganization within the Department of Health and Human Services, the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA) ceased to exist as of October 1992. In the Federal Agency category, data for the former ADAMHA are reported with the National Institutes of Health for all years.
3) The Social Security Administration, which was part of the Department of Health and Human Services, became a separate agency in 1996. Data for the Social Security Administration are reported as a separate agency for all years.
A link to the crosswalk from the survey-specific Federal Support Survey Agency category values to the cross-survey Federal Agency category values is provided in the "Crosswalks" section below.
|The National Science Foundation (NSF) has eliminated the
collection of data by field of science and engineering in the NSF Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to the Universities, Colleges and Nonprofit Institutions.
Data by academic discipline for academic institutions, but not agencies, may be obtained from the variable, "Federal R&D Expenditures" in "NSF R&D Expenditures Data." Data by academic discipline for agencies, but not academic institutions, may be obtained from the variables, "Basic Research Obligations by Field" and "Applied Research Obligations by Field" in "Federal R&D and R&D Plant Obligations." Development data are not available by academic discipline.|
|These data have been checked and verified to correspond
to data in the following NSF publication:|
