Description
This variable indicates the total number of earned doctoral degrees.
Availability
Data by race/ethnicity are available from academic year (AY) 1973 through AY 2006.

Data by citizenship and gender are available through AY 2006.
All other data are available from academic year (AY) 1966 through the present.
Notes
Because of doctorate recipients with unknown citizenship status, the total number of doctoral degrees is greater than the sum of doctoral degrees for U.S. citizens/permanent residents and non-U.S. citizens, temporary residents.
Multiple responses to race/ethnicity were redistributed, if possible, into a single race/ethnicity according to a priority scheme developed by the survey sponsors. Multiple responses that could not be redistributed are included in the race/ethnicity category, "Other," in WebCASPAR.
Quality Control
Owing to differences between WebCASPAR and the SED with respect to the coding of institutions, a small number of doctorate recipients are assigned an "unknown institution" code in WebCASPAR, a category that does not exist in the SED. As a result, WebCASPAR tabulations involving the following variables will not correspond exactly to similar tabulations appearing in NSF publications: academic institution, institutional control, state, Carnegie classification, and highest degree awarded.

To match the number of science and engineering (S&E) doctorates in the above publication, you must use the summation group, "S&E TOTAL (EXCL MEDICAL/OTH LIFE SCI)," in the "Academic Discipline" category in WebCASPAR.
