Analysis Variable:   Applied Research Obligations to Universities and Colleges
This variable indicates the amount of applied research obligations to universities and colleges by field of science and engineering.
Although the non-geographic historical data incorporate corrections to previously reported data that have been submitted by the reporting agencies, corresponding corrections to the geographic distributions are rarely obtainable. Therefore, totals for an agency in "Federal Research Obligations to Universities and Colleges" may not match totals for that agency obtained for university and college performers in "Federal R&D and R&D Plant Obligations." This type of discrepancy exists for the Energy Research and Development Administration in FY 1974 and for the Department of Interior in FY 1981.
Obligations represent the amounts for orders placed, contracts awarded, services received, and similar transactions during a given period, regardless of when the funds were appropriated.
Research is systematic study directed toward fuller scientific knowledge or understanding of the subject under study. Research is classified as either basic or applied according to the objectives of the sponsoring agency.
In applied research the objective of the sponsoring agency is to gain knowledge or understanding necessary for determining the means by which a recognized need may be met.
